What is FENSA?
FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme) is a government-authorised Competent Person Scheme for the replacement of windows and doors in homes across England and Wales.
The scheme was introduced to help ensure that replacement window and door installations meet the relevant Building Regulations. FENSA Approved Installers are regularly assessed to make sure their work continues to meet the required standards.
When qualifying replacement windows or doors are installed by a FENSA Approved Installer, the installation can be registered through FENSA with the local authority, removing the need for the homeowner to arrange a separate Building Control inspection.
Once the work has been completed and registered, the homeowner receives a FENSA Certificate. This provides important evidence that the installation:

Complies with the relevant Building Regulations
Has been registered with the local authority
Meets the required energy-efficiency standards
Has been completed by a FENSA Approved Installer
Has an insured guarantee in place where required

A FENSA Certificate is also an important document to keep with your property records. It is commonly requested by solicitors or conveyancers when a property is sold, as it provides evidence that qualifying replacement windows and doors were installed in accordance with Building Regulations.
FENSA covers qualifying replacement external windows and doors, as well as roof windows and roof lights, in existing domestic properties. It does not generally cover work such as windows and doors installed as part of a new build, new extension, conservatory or porch.
